Siena and San Gimignano with wine tasting
Siena, probably Italy’s loveliest medieval city, is characterized by its mediaeval brick buildings and central Piazza del Campo, where the famous horse race Il Palio, that takes place two times each summer. The town offer magnificent masterpieces and incredible views. Siena’s historic centre is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to buildings such as the 13th-century Duomo, the city’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral; and the 14th-century Torre del Mangia, whose 88-m high summit offers sweeping views, if you can manage the 400 steps. Walking along the narrow medieval streets, you will admire the splendid Cathedral where you can visit the marvelous interior including the Libreria Piccolomini. Siena was a very remarkable City-State in the Middle Ages, most of its important monuments were built between the XIII and XIV century, today we can still admire these artistic and architectural wonders and much more. There are so many hidden spots within the city walls where past and present blend together. They are off the tourists’ beaten paths and can be discovered only with a Private Guide. Dominated by its skyline of 14 mediaeval towers, San Gimignano was a booming stop-over on the Via Francigena pilgrim route during the Middle Ages. Today this well-preserved town is once again thriving thanks to a steady stream of tourists. Its most celebrated site is the stunning fresco-filled Collegiata Church of S. Maria Assunta which contains a Renaissance jewel: two exquisite scenes of S. Fina painted by Ghirlandaio. The town’s art museums include the Pinacoteca, with mediaeval and high renaissance works, and the Museum of Sacred Art, a highlight of which is a selection of 14th-century wooden sculptures. San Gimignano is not all about art and history, however. Its centre offers an abundance of tourist shops selling ceramics, leather goods, artworks and food, while its restaurant menus contain regional specialties including rabbit cooked with the local Vernaccia white wine or risotto made with locally-produced saffron.
